5 Times a Charm: My Epic 2025 Return to Latin America

South America has a way of calling you back. Whether it’s the rhythm of the cities or the silence of the glaciers, this continent offers something new every time I step off the plane. This March marked my 5th journey to this side of the world, and despite having seen the peaks of Peru and the icy vastness of Antarctica in 2022, this trip felt like a brand-new discovery. Planning this wasn't easy—it took three months of meticulous logistics, juggling flight dates, and praying for weather windows. But as I’ve learned: the harder the destination is to reach, the more beautiful the reward.

The Great Southern Gateway: Punta Arenas

My journey began with a marathon of flights: India → Dubai → Rio de Janeiro → Buenos Aires → Punta Arenas. It was exhausting, but landing in Punta Arenas—the wind-swept heart of Chilean Patagonia—is an instant energy boost.

  • City Vibes: I spent time exploring the city and visited the Magallanes Expedition Museum. Seeing the replicas of the ships that first navigated these treacherous waters makes you realize just how wild this region truly is.

  • Wildlife Wonders: A trip here isn't complete without visiting Los Pingüinos Natural Monument on Magdalena Island. Walking among thousands of Magellanic penguins is a core memory! I also explored the rugged beauty of Patagonia National Park, where the landscapes feel infinite.

The Island at the End of the World: Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

If Patagonia is the edge of the world, Easter Island is the heart of the Pacific. At 3,700 km from the mainland, getting here is a feat of endurance.

The "Rapid Rush" at Santiago Airport

Flying from Punta Arenas to Santiago and then to Easter Island is a high-stakes transition. There are only a few flights a week, and the "Easter Island Terminal" in Santiago has its own strict rules.

Pro-Tip: Be Prepared! To even board the plane, you must pass through a separate PDI (Investigative Police) check. I had to get this done in a "rapid rush" between flights. Make sure you have:

  1. An Official Invite: A reservation from a SERNATUR-registered accommodation or a specific invite from a local.

  2. Return Ticket: They will not let you board without proof of departure.

  3. Valid Visa/FUI Form: Ensure your Single Entry Form (FUI) is completed online before you reach the desk.

Poetry, Shared Meals, and Hollywood Magic

I stayed for three nights in a local homestay run by a local poet. It wasn't just a place to sleep; it was a cultural immersion. We spent days touring the North and South of the island, marveling at the Moai statues.

Interestingly, we even stumbled upon a Hollywood movie shoot happening right during our tour! But the highlight? Cooking in the home. I shared my food with my hosts—a small taste of home from India—and seeing them enjoy it was a beautiful bridge between our two cultures.

Final Thoughts

From the glaciers of the south to the mysteries of Rapa Nui, Latin America continues to surprise me. It’s a place where you start as a tourist and leave as a friend.
